Idaho Airbase Selected for New Qatari F-15 Training Center

A joint announcement by the U.S. and Qatar confirmed on Friday that Qatar's Air Force will establish a new facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho.5 The purpose of the new site is to host its F-15 fighter jets and provide advanced training for Qatari pilots.6

This decision highlights the expanding defense cooperation between the two countries, which recently involved the Trump administration providing Qatar with a notable security guarantee.

Clarifying the Status

The new structure, officially called the "Qatari Emiri Air Force facility," is not a standalone military base. It will be built inside the boundaries of the existing Mountain Home Airbase and will be subject to U.S. jurisdiction. This context is important because the announcement sparked immediate but perhaps misinformed controversy among some public figures.

Discussions for the deal began years ago, tracing back to the Biden administration. While many foreign nations train pilots on U.S. bases—Mountain Home currently trains Singaporean F-15 crews—the agreement stands out because Qatar will fund and construct a new, dedicated facility itself, a level of access typically reserved for only the closest U.S. partners.

The logistical reason for the site selection is straightforward: Qatar is geographically small and flat, which limits training options, particularly after its substantial F-15 purchase. The Idaho location offers the varied terrain and weather necessary for comprehensive pilot development.
