Man who found Ricky Hatton's body 'wants the truth out' about cause of death

Ricky Hatton's Manager, Paul Speak, Details the Discovery of the Boxer's Body

Paul Speak, the manager of former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton, has spoken out about the distressing moment he found his friend and client deceased at his Greater Manchester home earlier this month.

Speak’s account follows Hatton's funeral, which saw thousands line the streets to pay their respects, with numerous celebrities attending the service at Manchester Cathedral. The news of the boxing icon's death on September 14, stunning the sporting world, came nearly a full month before his final send-off.

The Manager’s Discovery

Speaking to Boxing News magazine, Speak explained he had gone to Hatton's residence to take him to the airport for a flight to Dubai.

"The lights weren't on, which I thought was strange. I thought he'd overslept, but it's not unusual," Speak recalled. "So, I went inside – I have a key – shouting, 'Rick, Rick, wake up!'"

The manager continued: "I heard music coming from upstairs, so I went upstairs... I took a look at him... I had to take some time to process it. I was in a state of shock and confusion and loss and many more emotions. Then I called the police and the ambulance."

"He Had It All to Live For"

Despite Hatton's well-documented previous mental health struggles, Speak maintains that the 46-year-old boxer was "in a really good place" before his death and was making extensive plans—a sentiment echoed by other family and friends.

"He'd arranged to take his daughters to see Oasis next week. He was planning to go to Thailand for the WBC convention and a holiday after his fight. He'd just booked a flight to Tenerife for Christmas," Speak stated.

He added: "I want to get the truth out, otherwise people will just speculate. There's been a lot of rubbish written about Ricky and his parents, but he'd seen his mum just last week; gave her a big hug and some love. He was going to see his dad after getting back from Dubai."

Speak concluded: "I firmly believe he didn't intend to do it. It's for the coroner to determine, but he had it all to live for." He noted that if this had happened 10 years ago, it wouldn't have been "as big a shock," citing his history with Hatton, traveling from "the very highest mountains in boxing to the lowest chasm in life."
