Move Your Domain to Another Host

Move Your Domain to Another Host

If you registered your domain with WordPress.com, you don’t have to use WordPress.com as your host. The domain you registered is yours, and you can use it with any host you want.

Here are three options for using a domain registered with WordPress.com outside of WordPress.com:

Note: If you registered your domain elsewhere, you should contact your registrar for information on pointing it away from WordPress.com. Use ourDomain Helper to check where your domain is registered.

Transfer domain registration to another registrar

To transfer a domain from one registrar to another, you need to generate an authorization and send it to the new registrar. With this unique code, the old registrar will allow the new registrar to take over the domain registration.

You can get your authorization code (also called EPP code) fromDomains, by clicking Edit and thenTransfer Domain.

The transfer usually takes a few days. When it’s complete, your domain will no longer be registered with WordPress.com. This doesn’t affect your WordPress.com blog. It will still be available at the free .wordpress.com address.

Change name servers to point the domain outside of WordPress.com

You can leave your domain registered with WordPress.com and point it to another host by changing its name servers. You’ll keep the domain upgrade you purchased with us, and just stop using our hosting.

To change name servers, you need to insert the name servers provided by your host under My Domains — by clicking Edit and then Name Servers.

Updating DNS records using A Records

Some hosting providers require further DNS changes to point a domain to their servers. They may provide A and CNAME records you need to add to your WordPress.com domain.

Which of these options is the best for me?

All of these options achieve the same result – your domain will point to another site, with another host.

If your new host supports incoming domain transfers, it may be easier to have both your domain and your hosting managed in the same place.
