How To Add Video To a WordPress Post or Page

WordPress makes it very easy to add video to a post or a page. And with the popularity of video, you are missing out if you don’t take advantage of it.

You will learn how to upload video to your media library and its pros and cons, two ways of embedding video and how to create a video playlist from your uploaded videos

[box]NOTE: This tutorial does not reflect one change in WordPress 4.1. You can now simply add a Vine to a post or page by pasting in the URL.[/box]

Embedding The Video

If you have a video on a service like YouTube, or want to share one from there, you can simply grab the embed code. Just remember, it’s only available with other peoples videos if they allow embeds.

Embedding: Using the Share URL

One option you have is to go into the page for the video you want to embed, click on share > share and copy that URL.

Or you can choose to grab the embed code. This gives you a couple more options including size.

Once you have copied either one of these, go into your post or page and insert it where you want it. Just remember, in both cases, you will need to switch your view to the text tab and insert it there. If you try and do it using the visual tab, you will only get the code showing up in your post or page.

Now switch to the visual editor. You will see that the embed URL gives you a preview of your video in your editor window, but the embed code only shows a gray box. In either case, if you preview or publish your post or page, your video is now ready to watch.

Note, if you click on the embed code gray box in your visual editor, you can drag the corners to resize your video.

Uploading Video to Your Media Library and Inserting It

You can  upload video to your media library and easily insert it into a page or a post just like you do photos. But be aware. Videos take up a lot of space on your server and also bandwidth. Using a lot of videos this way could decrease your site load speed. And your hosting may require you to upgrade your space or the amount of bandwidth you are using. If you just do an occasional small video, this is fine. But if you do more video, or large files, one of the next two options is best for embedding and steaming in your video.

You can also drag and drop it directly into your post or page editor window like you do with other media.

Once you have inserted it, you get a live preview in your visual editor.

Video Playlist

NOTE: The video playlist option will not show up until you have video files uploaded to your media library. Again, if you are uploading the videos directly to your site, and are being careful of not bogging down your server with tons of large videos, you can also create a video playlist easily. Choose Insert Media > Create Video Playlist, and it will show all videos you have uploaded. Simply select the ones you want in your playlist.

Once you have done that, click on Create a new video playlist. This window will come up where you can change titles and order the videos as you want them listed.

Then Insert video playlist and you will see this.
